The Computers in the Seabreeze Office are accessible remotely via the following tools, each has their own advantages and disadvantages. In particular
-
TeamViewer: While it is free initially, it is possible to fall in the assumed-commercial-use trap – which then allows remote access only for up to 5 minutes, reminding you you can avoid that by paying up. The user can set up a contact list with names one can easily remember. One can check out which of the contacts are online, and you get a pop-up message when a particular contact comes online. File transfer is possible, however, at least in some older version the transfer resulted in corrupted file. The access to TV’s contacts requires the cooperation of TV’s server.
-
TightVNC runs solely between the users without involving a central server, and requires more work to set it up. In particular, if the destination computer is on a network that changes the IP address of its connected equipment (dynamic IP vs, fixed IP address), such changes need to be communicated to a dynamics DNS server. TVNC has a weak password protection (only up to 8 characters). It has File transfer which seems reliable. A command file can be setup to quickly access one particular remote computer.

UltraViewer is similar to TeamViewer, but it does not maintain a contact list for the user (previously used contacts are cached, but it is up to the user to remember which user is behind each number). File transfer is not possible (it may have been added in later version). There appears to be a problem for UV to sort out where the key commands and mouse clicks are going, leading sometimes to strange behaviors, which can be resolved only by shutting down the program altogether. The access to UV’s contacts requires the cooperation of UV’s server. UV is free of charge. A command file can be setup to quickly access one particular remote computer.
